The freshmen engineering students at Southwest High School were able to partake in special Chemistry Week Activities at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History in October. They had the opportunity to interview chemists from Alcon as well as do some chemistry experiments. They also visited the Energy Blast exhibit. The exhibit featured interactive stations for the students to explore, including a 50,000-pound seismic vibroseis truck, a 30 foot model of a drilling apparatus and a model city where students used renewable and non-renewable resources to “power” the city. The students also embarked on a Journey to the Center of the Barnett Shale, by viewing and experiencing the 4-D film. The video explained how natural gas formed within the shale deposits of North Texas. The outing concluded with a video at the Planetarium. A special thanks to the IPAA/PESA Education Center for funding this trip.
