The IPAA/PESA Petroleum Academy at Southwest High School had eleven upcoming seniors participate in externships at Weir Oil & Gas, XTO Energy, Texland and Harbison-Fischer. The externship application process included interview preparation, resume writing, professional workplace conduct training and Dale Carnegie training. These students spent up to two weeks job shadowing professionals in the energy industry. They learned about engineering, safety, supply chain, sales engineering, gas marketing, public and governmental affairs, geology and human resources. The externships concluded with each senior giving a presentation in front of the executives at the energy companies. Students not only gained invaluable experiences, they were awarded $1000 scholarships! They walked away feeling the externship experience was life changing. Many thanks to the IPAA/PESA Energy Education Center, Weir Oil & Gas, XTO Energy, Texland and Harbison-Fischer. Without these partnerships the externship program would not be possible.
